Are Dental Implants Right For Me?
Published on August 30th, 2017
Dental implants have become a popular and effective way to replace your missing teeth. They are a long-term option that are designed with natural look to blend in with the rest of your smile.
What Is A Dental Implant?
A dental implant is a titanium post that is surgically placed below the gums and into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. Once the artificial root is positioned into the bone, Dr. Silva can then connect the new replacement tooth or teeth onto it. Implants provide stable support for artificial teeth, as well as a more comfortable and secure fit to ensure dentures and bridges won’t slide around in your mouth.
What Are The Phases Of A Dental Implant Process?
There are usually three phases during the dental implant process:
First, the implant is surgically positioned into your jaw so it can act as a sturdy anchor for your new artificial teeth.
Next, as you heal, your bone will actually begin to grow around the titanium post to further lock it in place so it won’t shift in your mouth. This healing process is called osseointegration – “combines with bone” – and can take several months. During this time, Dr. Silva will often offer a temporary tooth option to fill the gap in your mouth while this process takes place.
Finally, Dr. Silva can mount the new artificial tooth or teeth on the implant. If you only need a single tooth replaced, Dr. Silva will create a customized artificial crown to match the rest of your teeth. If you need multiple teeth replaced, a bridge or dentures will be made, once again customized to blend in with the rest of your smile, and then mounted to your implant.
