Brush Away the Sugar Craze; 5 Toothbrushing Tips

The holiday season comes with sugar. A lot of sugar.

We all know that sugar is bad for your teeth, but that wasn’t always so.

In fact, when the ancient Greek philosopher, Aristotle, first observed that sweet foods caused tooth decay, no one believed him.
As science has progressed, one thing has become apparent— sugar causes tooth decay. We’ve put together a list of brushing tips so that you can clean off the sweets and maintain your dental hygiene while enjoying all those holiday treats.

1. Brush Twice Daily: To prevent cavities, it is essential to remove plaque. Plaque is the transparent layer of bacteria that coasts your teeth. The best way to do this is by brushing your teeth twice daily, which is especially important during the holidays.
2. Two Minutes Per Session: Current recommendations from the American Dental Association (ADA) suggest brushing your teeth for two minutes, twice per day. If you spend less than two minutes brushing, you’ll have a more difficult time removing enough plaque from your teeth left behind by sweets.

3. Cover All Surfaces: Make sure that you are consciously getting those nooks and crannies that sweet treats love to hide in. Get the front, back and chewing surfaces of your teeth, as well as your tongue during your two-minute sessions to rid yourself of all that hidden bacteria.
4. Replace Your Toothbrush Often: It is always a good idea to take heed of this tip, but particularly during the holidays. We recommend getting a new toothbrush every three months. If you are rough on your brush (p.s., don’t be!) or if your brush is showing wear, replace it as soon as it frays around the edges. A frayed brush will not be nearly as effective in removing bacteria.
