Why Every Athlete Needs a Custom-Fit Mouth Guard

Published on October 3rd, 2019

Just how important is it for your child to wear a mouth guard? According to the American Dental Association, more than 200,000 mouth injuries are prevented each year by wearing a mouth guard during sporting activities. Young athletes may not realize the true importance of wearing a mouth guard while playing sports, but it is important to keep them educated on the dangers that could happen without one. After all, the cost of replacing a lost tooth is at least 20 times more expensive than the cost of a mouth guard!

Mouth guards do just as they say—they guard your mouth! They are an essential piece of gear that all athletes should wear when playing sports. However, not all sports require athletes to wear one. A survey done by the American Association of Orthodontists revealed that 84% of children don’t wear mouth guards because they aren’t required to by the sport’s team. While mouth injuries are commonly associated with contact sports such as football or lacrosse, they can also happen in non-contact activities such as tennis and gymnastics. Regardless of the sport your child plays, it is crucial that you reduce the chance of a dental injury occurring by requiring them to wear a mouth guard.

There are three main types of mouth guards: boil and bite, stock, and custom-fitted. Out of these, the best one for your child is a custom-fit mouth guard made by your dentist! Here at Chesterfield Family Dentistry, we create custom mouth guards that will provide your child with the proper oral protection he or she needs. In order to make the mouth guard a staple piece of your child’s uniform, we create them in their team’s colors!

There are many reasons why a custom-fit mouth guard is the best option for an athlete when compared to the standard boil and bite and stock options. Many athletes don’t want to wear a mouth guard because they complain about it being uncomfortable or too loose in their mouth. However, when it is custom made to fit the specific structure of the athlete’s mouth, there is no chance of it being too loose or too tight, making it more comfortable for the athlete.

A custom-fit mouth guard also allows athletes to talk and communicate with teammates better than over the counter ones. Boil and bite and stock mouth guards tend to be bulkier and ill fitting, making it difficult for athletes to speak while wearing it. However, the precise fit of a custom mouth guard allows for smooth conversation while still firmly guarding their teeth.

Once the athlete has a mouth guard, it is also important that the he or she wears it correctly! It’s impossible for a mouth guard to do its job when it’s hanging from a helmet or hanging out of the athlete’s mouth. With the comfortable fit of a custom-made mouth guard, there is no reason or excuse not to want to wear it!
