Dental Crown FAQs

Your teeth are basically made up of crowns and roots. The crown is the part of the tooth that appears above the gum line, and at Chesterfield Family Dentistry when we make dental crowns we’re referring to an artificial crown used to repair a severely decayed or damaged tooth. Our dental crowns in Chesterfield are made to look and function just like your natural teeth.

What are crowns made of?

Different materials are used to make dental crowns, but most commonly they’re made of porcelain, all-ceramic, glass, or gold alloy.

How do you prepare a crown?

The first step is to prepare the tooth for the ideal shape of the crown. This involves removing a layer of the outer surface, leaving a strong inner core.

Once the tooth is shaped, our dental team will make an impression of the prepared tooth, as well as one of the opposite jaw, and possibly another that shows your natural bite.

We give the impressions to a dental technician, along with information about the proper shade of the crown and any other pertinent information.

Finally, we apply a temporary crown so you can use the tooth while technicians prepare the permanent crown.

What is a post crown?

In root-filled teeth, it may be necessary to insert a post into the tooth root before attaching the crown. The post gives support and helps keep the crown in place. It’s cemented in place in the root canal, ready for the crown to be attached.

Is the procedure painful?

We’ll use a local anesthetic while preparing the tooth for a crown, and overall it will feel about the same as having a tooth filled. And the procedure takes about 1-2 hours.

Will my crown be noticeable?

We will match your crown as closely as possible to your natural teeth to reduce the noticeability. Frankly, most people can’t tell the difference between a crown and your natural teeth. We use only the finest materials, and a great dental lab to give you a natural-looking crown that will last for countless smiles to come.

How long will the crown last?

Properly cared for with daily brushing and flossing and regular dental cleanings, your crown should last from 5 to 15 years and possibly longer.
