Your Smile Is Our Passion

Dental Veneers FAQs

Dental veneers are thin pieces of porcelain used to replace the outer layers of teeth that are chipped, worn down, stained or in other ways unattractive. Helping our patients get the smile they want with dental veneers in Chesterfield is one of our specialties at Chesterfield Family Dentistry, and if you think this procedure is something you might want, here are answers to some of the questions we’re most frequently asked.

What’s involved in getting dental veneers?

Getting dental veneers is a multi-step process. At an initial consultation, we’ll discuss your goals and concerns, and we’ll explain how veneers will work for you. Next, we’ll prepare your tooth for the veneer by removing a small portion of the tooth, making an impression of it, and applying a temporary veneer. At the last visit, the temporary is removed, and the permanent veneer is bonded to your tooth.

What are the advantages of veneers?

Beyond improving the appearance of your teeth, veneers preserve the most amount of tooth structure as very little of the tooth needs to be removed. Gum structures respond well to veneers, and porcelain veneers are stain resistant.

How long do dental veneers last?

Typically, they will last 7 to 20 years and properly cared for, possibly much longer. They do not require any special treatment beyond daily brushing and flossing and regular dental checkups and a professional cleaning every 6 months.

Can veneers be repaired?

Yes, chipped veneers can be repaired. Also, over time gum tissue around the veneers will change, and that may require alterations to your veneers.

How many veneers do I need?

This is a question we’ll discuss during your initial consultation. Generally, it’s a good idea to have an even number of veneers – two, four, six, etc. – to achieve the best aesthetic results.

How do I care for my veneers?

In addition to daily brushing, flossing, and professional cleanings, it’s a good idea to avoid eating hard foods like almonds or cracking shells with the front veneers.

With veneers, will I still get cavities?

There is no higher or lower incidence of tooth decay with veneers as long as you give them proper care.

Does dental insurance cover veneers?

It really depends on your dental plan, and you should check with your insurance provider.
