Your Smile Is Our Passion

Maintaining Your Oral Health

Your oral health will be with you for a lifetime, so it is important that you take the necessary steps to take the proper care of your smile. Simple, routine dental care habits can make all of the difference in your oral health. Visiting our Chesterfield dentist on a regular basis can help spot issues before they arise, saving you both time and money in the long run. Besides regular dental visits, here are the steps that you can take outside of our office to make sure your mouth is the healthiest it can be.

Brush Your Teeth Twice per Day

Clean teeth are an important facet of your oral health. If too much bacteria builds up on your teeth, you run the risk of developing cavities. To combat this, the American Dental Association recommends that you brush your teeth twice per day, once in the morning and once at night. Make sure you don’t rush through the brushing process and pay attention to hard-to-reach areas. The technique that you use to brush also plays a role in how effective it is: try to hold your toothbrush at an angle pointed at the area that your teeth meet your gums. Brush the inside, outside and chewing surfaces of your teeth as well as your tongue. Keep your toothbrush clean and allow it to stand upright between uses.

Flossing Your Teeth

Our Chesterfield dentist highly recommends flossing as part of your oral health routine. Flossing allows you to reach in-between your teeth and under your gum line, reducing your risk of developing gingivitis and gum disease. Your piece of floss should be around 18 inches and you can wrap it around the middle finger on one hand and the rest around the middle finger of your other hand. Grip the floss with your thumbs and forefingers and gently guide it between your teeth in an up-and-down motion. Take it one tooth and a time and be gentle while doing so.

Using the WaterPik flosser to get between your teeth is another way we recommend flossing.

Other Ways to Care for Your Mouth

Consider using a mouthwash with fluoride to also improve your oral health. Avoid eating sticky, chewy or acidic foods as well as chewing tobacco.
