Your Smile Is Our Passion

Teeth Whitening

Most of us try to keep healthy teeth, gums and a bright smile through daily brushing and flossing, but we often notice that our smile just doesn’t have the sparkle it once had.

But there’s good news. In many cases, you can have that brighter, youthful smile through teeth whitening, and here are some commonly asked questions about the process.

Why do teeth change color?

  • Food and Drink – Coffee, tea and red wine all contain color pigments known as chromogens that attach to the enamel on your teeth.
  • Tobacco – The nicotine in cigarettes is colorless until it mixes with oxygen and turns into a yellowish, staining substance.
  • Age – A soft, yellowish area known as dentin lies beneath the surface of our teeth, and as we brush the outer layer of enamel away, the dentin shows through.
  • Trauma – An injured tooth can respond to trauma by producing more dentin and a darkened area under the surface.
  • Medication – Certain antibiotics, high blood pressure medication, chemotherapy and radiation to the head and neck can lead to discoloration.

How does whitening work?

Whitening bleaches contain either hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, and these bleaches break stains into smaller pieces making the color less concentrated and your teeth brighter.

At our office, we offer custom whitening trays made specifically for each patient! They are custom-fit to ensure an accurate bleaching of the entire tooth’s surface. These trays can be used for years–you’ll simply need to pick up new bleach after each cleaning appointment!

Are there whitening options?

Yes, there’re several.

  • Whitening toothpaste – You can buy brands carrying the seal of the American Dental Association that contain special polishing agents to remove surface stains.
  • Over-the-counter kits – You can buy whitening kits approved by the ADA, but these require 7-30 days of consistent use to achieve their full effect.

In-Office Treatment

All options considered, we believe that your best option is in-office treatment performed by Dr. Silva. After a thorough examination of your teeth, gums and supporting bone structure, Dr. Silva will determine if you’re a candidate for teeth whitening.

If so, he’ll do the following:

  • Cover your lips and gums so only your teeth are exposed to the whitening agent
  • Apply a professional-level whitening gel to your teeth
  • Expose your teeth to a special light for 15 minutes to help the gel penetrate your teeth
  • Possibly reapply the gel and light treatment during two additional appointments

Each appointment takes between 30 to 90 minutes, and the number of appointments depends on how severe the stains are and how white you want your teeth to be.

And that’s it! So, email or call us today at 314-878-9808 and let Dr. Silva restore your bright, youthful smile.
